The Power to Focus:
On this NOT That – Part 2
Scripture Reading: Colossians 3:1-6
Key Verse: Colossians 3:2
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
As we continue our study from yesterday’s devotional, we need to develop tools to improve our focus. As we saw yesterday, what we want to focus on is the eternal things that are really going to matter most when this life is over. The question that must be answered is: How do we stay focused on the “things above” as Paul tells us to do in our printed key verse?
Since God has promised that all temptations are common to man, we can defeat the devil’s lies with God’s truth. We must take time to think through the temptations that are common to us, which are different for each person. As you look at your history, what lies have you often been defeated by? Then, think through God’s truths that apply to those lies. If you keep falling to the same temptations, you should write these things down on paper and read them often!
During the heat of temptation, demand your mind focus on truth. Remember, temptation lasts only a short period of time, but the feelings of shame and consequences can last long periods of time! Focus on that statement when the devil is whispering his lies to you.
Finally, don’t try to defeat a temptation by telling yourself—over and over–not to do it! Rather, defeat temptation by refocusing your mind on something different. As a Christ follower, you can sing a worship song. Or quote a scripture to get your mind set on the “things above”!
Father, thank you for your Spirit in me to help me focus on the proper things. I am determined to honor you today! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
