Learn and Share: Devoted to Teaching

Scripture Reading:  Acts 2:43-47

Key Verse: Acts 2:42

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

This popular passage of scripture that we are studying today lays out the fulfillment of Jesus’ commission to His disciples.  Jesus told them to go and teach; they did and the people responded.  People respond to the teaching of God’s Word because, like no other kind of material, the Word is God’s breath—it is alive.  When the Word of God is taught, people’s hearts and minds are touched.

We see in our printed key verse for today that the listening crowd devoted themselves to the teaching.  Think of what it means to devote yourself to something.  We spend time doing the activity.  We learn as much as we can about that activity.  A person who is devoted is passionate about it and it shows to all that observe them.

So it is when a person decides to be a devotee of the Word of God.  They spend time reading the Bible.  They have pen and paper ready to write down thoughts about what is being read.  They jot down questions that need research.  A devotee has a passion to go deep in God’s Word and applies it to their daily life.  It would also be true that a devotee would talk to people around him about the truths he is discovering.  When all this happens, Jesus’ Great Commission is being fulfilled.  The Word is learned and shared!

Father, I determine to be a devotee of your Word.  I will spend time and energy in my study of the scriptures, sharing what I learn with those around me.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
