Commit to the Commission: An Evangelist – Part 1
Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 4:1-5
Key Verse: 2 Timothy 4:5
But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
The Apostle Paul is instructing Timothy on how to care for the household of God. Taking care of a household is a big job in our secular world. On the outside of the house, there is lawn maintenance. Most have flowerbeds that must be weeded and watered. On the inside of the house, repairs must be made and cleaning must be a routine. After all this, the people in the household must be cared for.
In God’s household, there are many areas to care for. God has gifted His children with unique gifts that, when working together, will accomplish all that needs to be done. Evangelism is one of the areas that must be attended to. This area is the work of preaching the Good News to those who have yet to receive God’s salvation through Jesus Christ. Paul told Timothy to “do the work of an evangelist.” My guess is this did not come naturally to Timothy. As pastor, he had to make sure that it was accomplished.
I believe that each of us should read our printed scripture today and receive it as our “job.” We must do the work of an evangelist whenever God opens a door of opportunity. We may not be gifted in a way that makes it come naturally, but we can offer ourselves to God to accomplish the work. (More tomorrow.)
Father, I know that lost people are on your heart. Please keep them on my heart as well. Grant me your love and courage. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
