The Urgency of Eternity: Like Lightning
Scripture Reading: Matthew 24:26.31
Key Verse: Matthew 24:27
For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
I believe we need to feel a sense of urgency when it comes to seeing our world turn to the true God and His Son Jesus. I believe God knows we can’t walk every day with the same level of emotion or intensity about people’s salvation. There should be seasons for this amped up intensity to focus our prayers and energy to evangelism. This month is meant to call attention to and call for a season to renew our energy levels for influencing others toward Christ.
In our printed key verse for today, Jesus reminds us that His appearing happens unexpectedly and quickly. Jesus uses lightning as an illustration of how it will be. Lightning will flash and then it’s over. We will be going about our daily routines and with great suddenness, Jesus will appear, the redeemed will be taken from this earth, and the final days of this earth will wind down.
The suggested additional reading section for today reminds us that this event will be noticed—all the nations will mourn—those left behind. A loud trumpet call will announce Jesus’ return. Those already in heaven will be called from the “four corners of heaven” to accompany Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 4:14 confirms that Jesus will bring with Him those who have died in Christ. Then Jesus and those He brought with Him will lead the parade back to heaven. Those believers who are alive at that time will follow them up!
Father, I can’t fathom all that will happen, but I want to be ready and I want to influence as many as possible to prepare for those days as well. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
