The Urgency of Eternity:
Scripture Reading: Matthew 24:36-44
Key Verse: Matthew 24:42
Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.
In our scripture passage for today, Jesus points to the uncertainty of when this life will come to an end. When Jesus returns, life as we know it stops, and a new season of God’s plan unfolds—the last one of this earth.
“Keep watch” is the key phrase for every believer! Be ever mindful, in other words, to this fact that we have no guarantee for tomorrow! Keep watch is a phrase that should keep us on high alert. It is a phrase that should drive us to keep our lives pure and ready to depart from this earth! Keep watch should give us all a sense of urgency. In verse 44, Jesus repeats this idea with these words: “So you also must be ready, because the Son of man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
As we think about “walking across the room” to possibly open a friendship that might lead to that person receiving Christ, we need an urgency. Sometimes those opportunities will be Spirit led and God has been at work on that person’s heart. You might receive the blessing of your life by being the one God uses to assist that person in their eternal decision. We must take each opportunity as God gives them, and do it with His courage. The enemy will create scenarios of fear in our minds, but we must push through it urgently!
Father, give me your spirit of wisdom as I walk through this day. Help me not to miss any opportunities to be your voice in this world. I pray this in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
