What We Believe About Hell
Weeping
Scripture Reading: Matthew 24:45-51
Key Verse: Matthew 24:51
He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
It is easy to skip any study of hell. It is not a pleasant subject to consider. Many deny its existence while others believe it is a place made only for the devil and his imps. I received a mass email a couple of years ago from a group of Christians that were determined to prove to me that hell was not an actual place where God would allow anyone to end up for eternity.
The problem is, Jesus spoke many times about hell, giving detail of its existence and how it will feel to end up there. Today’s scriptural verses are Jesus’ words. Jesus is telling us of this horrible place where people who reject God’s truth will spend eternity.
You and I have heard people joke about hell—that it will be a party with their many friends. Jesus gives us the facts and it will be far from a party. Jesus gives us a picture of their emotional state once they land in hell. He tells us that there will be weeping. Please take a moment and consider what makes a person weep. This emotional state is not shedding a tear or two…weeping is a mournful, broken state of being. Weeping results from a realization of great regret. Weeping comes from a heart that knows there is no hope of relief.
Father, thoughts of hell remind me of how grateful I am to you for sending Jesus for my salvation. I will praise you throughout eternity! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
