What Holy Matters?
Put to Death – Part 3
Scripture Reading: Colossians 3:6-11
Key Verse: Colossians 3:5
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.
Finally, on this subject of putting things to death, the apostle puts the icing on the cake. His words in our additional scripture reading for today are, “Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.” Wow, God really hates what we have been talking about in our last two devotionals. We must not take lightly our job to put to death the things that belong to our earthly nature that are contrary to God’s holy nature!
If we go back to my illustration of getting rid of roaches, we can see how we would feel if an exterminator didn’t take his job seriously. When we called him, our intent was to get rid of all the roaches! How would you feel if he felt getting rid of 90% of them was a great accomplishment and was not willing to finish the job?
The devil wants you to stop short of 100% obedience. He can even make you feel good about getting rid of most of the sins of your past! Our enemy will whisper, “Good job, most is cleaned up. Good enough.” However, God is never satisfied with only 90% of the “roaches” gone. He knows that any sinful behaviors left in our lives will soon multiply into greater offenses against God!
God’s wrath is coming against these sins! We must determine that God’s wrath need not come near us. Today, stay faithful to the battle to put to death the sinful nature!
Father, grant me endurance to fight the good fight against my flesh! I determine to go all the way and never stop short of 100% obedience to you! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
