What Holy Matters?
Put to Death – Part 1
Scripture Reading: Colossians 3:6-11
Key Verse: Colossians 3:5
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.
If someone said to you, “go put to death the roaches in their house,” would you understand what they wanted? You might not be totally sure how, but you would certainly know the intent of their request! Sometimes people use the excuse for not reading their Bible that they just can’t understand it. Yes, there are parts that take more than casual reading to understand. However, I contend that most of the Bible is very clear and easily understood.
Today’s key verse leaves no doubt as to the intent of the request. We are to put to death — rid ourselves of — the things in our earthly nature. Of course, Paul is referring to those elements of our earthly nature that go against the holy nature of God. We are called to live a life devoid of contradictions. People are to be able to look deep into our lives and only see the effects of God’s grace in us.
Now, like getting rid of roaches, getting rid of contradictions to a holy life takes more than one effort. In fact, it is a lifelong challenge for all sincere Christ followers to daily “put to death” the things that belong to our earthly nature. But, make no mistake, total extermination is our goal! When we see a “roach”, we put it to death! Whatever may be pointed out by God’s Spirit within us, we target. We must “shoot to kill”—no compromise—no mercy. By his grace, put it to death!
Father, I am on a mission today! I am determined to put to death anything that does not fit into a Christ like lifestyle. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
