And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight

I have to admit I like things that get to a point of completeness.  Those things that, after some hard work, we can stand back and say: Done!  Our spiritual life does not fit this category.  It is one of those things that can grow and improve for the rest of our lives!  We are never to see it as done.  In fact, if we think we have reached the pinnacle of our spirituality, it is a strong indicator that we are far from it!

            The Apostle Paul’s prayer in Philippians chapter one focuses on our growth in Christ.  He starts the prayer with three words: “more and more,” letting us know that our love of God, through Jesus Christ, must be ever growing.  We should approach our journey with God like we approach the birth of a child.  We expect continual growth in the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual areas of their life.  It would be devastating to us if our child did not “abound more and more” in these areas.

            I wish it would devastate us when our walk with God stagnates!  Why do we live with the fact that our spiritual life is at a stand still?  I think many Christ followers have gotten used to this state of decay.  They are slowly dying in their passion for spiritual things, yet it doesn’t stir them to do anything about it!  I hope you will pray Philippians 1:9-11, first for yourself, asking God to help your love to abound more and more, rather than decay more and more!

 “Father, keep my love for you growing!  Help me to stay passionate about the things that are eternal.  Open my eyes to any lukewarmness.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
